Greetings and welcome to Part Six of this teaching series on “Knowledge of the Truth”. This series will focus on the Truth, Divine Truth, and the importance of increasing our knowledge day by day. As we move forward, I want to remind us of a statement I made yesterday. This type of knowledge is not just knowing or having information about a thing but must be acquired by active pursuit and practice of the knowledge. Epignosis sits over, is superior to, and is the very core of knowledge and it is a functional knowledge, producing fruitfulness and multiplication. Being successful in the Kingdom of God is really no different than gaining success in the natural world. I will start off today dealing with 1st Timothy 2:4 and the idea that one can be saved, going to Heaven, but never pursued knowledge of the Truth. Let’s review that and move on.
1 Timothy 2:4 (KJV)
4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
So, what about this knowledge of the truth? I will be repeating myself some, but we need repetition, after all that is in part what meditation is. Concerning the word knowledge, I will focus on the New Testament Greek word, epignōsis, which is Strong’s number G1922. This word imparts the idea of clear and exact knowledge, acquiring this knowledge requires an active and comprehensive participation of the individual, in turn this knowledge causes changes not only in the persons religious life, but all of their life.
Many live two separate lives, one being the Christian or religious life, and other being the worldly life depending on where we are and who we are with. We are appointed and designed to change the world not join it. Our acquisition of the knowledge of God, of Jesus, of the Truth must proceed and produce a Christian or Christ like life. I think you can see this knowledge is not gained just by living life and showing up for Church on Sunday. This knowledge requires active participation and a studying to show oneself approved of God.
There is a profound difference between reading the Bible and studying the Bible. As we study, with the idea to do, then the impact of this acquired knowledge will cause us to change the way we think and subsequently the way we talk and act. We will day by day be changed into the image and likeness of the Master. Studying the Word of God is a command from God not a holy suggestion. Not studying is sin. Not to listen to the Word and examine the Word with the idea of doing the Word is rebellion and idolatry.
2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
“Rightly dividing the word of truth” not only points to this higher level of knowledge but to understanding with wisdom. It is this higher level of knowledge, acquired and acted upon that brings about our transformation to Christlikeness. Is the cry of our heart “I want to be just like Jesus”?
In the beginning, man (Adam) was made in the image and likeness of Elohim and given dominion over the whole earth (Genesis 1:26-28). Sin changed that but Jesus at Calvary bought back our full capacity to be just like Him. As we acquire this highest level of knowledge of the Word our faith is building, and we are being transformed to be as the Master. That is just like Him in thought, word, and deed. With regard to our standing (righteousness) Scripture tells us that as He is, so are we in this world (1 John 4:17). Our primary mission is to be just like Jesus not only in Word, but in our actions. We are not only called to do the things that Jesus did but to do the greater things (John 14:12). All information can build faith in one or more realms (spirit, soul, body or physical) but the knowledge I am speaking of builds our faith in God causing us to be complete or mature persons in Christ Jesus.
TAKE HOME:
- It all starts with salvation but pleasing the Father comes with acquiring a knowledge of the Truth and walking in it.
- We must study, not just read, to rightly or correctly divide the Word of Truth. We study the Bible from the Bible and prove the Bible from the Bible. Other sources can be helpful, but they are not the Truth.
- We are already like Jesus in our standing with the Father now we need to grow in our knowledge of the Truth to function like Jesus in the things He did and the greater things.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
