A WELL OF TRUTH
THE COMMUNION TABLE REVISITED

Greetings dear and precious saints of God, brothers and sisters with me and Christ Jesus in the Kingdom of God, the family of God. Welcome back to “A Well of Truth”. Today I am once again exploring the Communion Table. As we move forward, please take a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you. Thank you for sharing. I wrote a short series about Communion a short while ago and I am again quickened to revisit the topic. Communion is a sacrament in the Catholic and Christian Church meaning a ceremony, ritual, service, or mass. Herein lies the issue. In many Churches it is a scheduled event, while in others more sporadic. Over the years I have seen the Communion Table, the taking of Communion, given great attention and gravity (seriousness, importance, significance) and little to almost none. Is there any greater remembrance that we observe after salvation? I dare say not. Now, let’s turn to Scripture.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 (KJV)
23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.
In the preceding passage we see the Apostle Paul by direct revelation plus Scripture recount what happened in the upper room at the time of the “Last Supper”. We see that observing Communion is a command from Jesus, but a frequency is not commanded. We can take, observe, Communion as often as we are led of the Holy Spirit or we have a desire. The taking of Communion must never be just routine, a ritual without profound meaning, taken in a hurried manner, considered commonplace, or observed as nothing special (something we do). Now, let’s move forward focusing on the word, “unworthily” and the phrase “not discerning the Lord’s body”.
1 Corinthians 11:27-32 (KJV)
27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
How does one partake of the Communion Table, the remembrance of the Christ in an unworthily manner. The word “unworthily” according to the Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary means “without due regard to merit”. Strong’s Greek dictionary defines it as being done irreverently (flippant, disrespectful). Jesus body was broken so that ours not be in any way. Moses had this under the Old Covenant (Deuteronomy 34:7), do we have a lesser Covenant, no, of course not! The Blood of Jesus sealed our Covenant forever, blotting out (no record), not just covering our sins for a season, and gave us eternal life in Him. What part of this should be treated as common? What about discerning the Lord’s body? One aspect is what I have just talked about, being profoundly thankful for the broken body and Blood of Jesus. The second aspect has to do with giving proper recognition to others in the body of Christ as sons of the Father and our brothers and sisters, precious in His sight. So, what is the outcome of not giving the Communion Table and what it brings to remembrance the proper attention, and not loving, and honoring, all of our brothers and sisters in Christ?
1 Corinthians 11:29-30 (KJV)
29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
Look around, let’s look at ourselves, do we see any weak, any sickly, or any that have gone on prematurely? What should we take away from these Scriptures, from this teaching?
