SPIRIT OF UNDERSTANDING

Greetings dear and precious saints of God and welcome back to this fascinating, stimulating, and faith building study of the Book of Isaiah. Please take a moment before I proceed to share these teachings as widely as possible to expand our reach with the gospel, the Truth. You are an important part of this Ministry. Thank you for sharing. The beautiful picture featured today is from our good friend and man of God, Joe Getchell Jr., thank you Joe, may the Lord bless you richly. Last week we started a study of the eleventh chapter of Isaiah and have been discussing the Seven Spirits of the Lord and today we come to the Spirit of understanding. Now let’s turn our attention to our primary text and continue reading out loud.
Isaiah 11:1-4 (KJV)
1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:
2 And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;
3 And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
4 But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.
As you know this passage is Messianic, that is discussing the coming Messiah, Redeemer, and His Anointing. By the way, His Anointing are ours in Him whether we know it or not, feel it or not (least important), or operate in that Anointing (or Anointing). We have a responsibility to not only discover these things and receive them by faith, believe, prove, doubt not, and move in them as led of the Holy Spirit. First let’s look more closely at the definition of the word ‘understanding’. What is the difference between wisdom and understanding?
Wisdom has to do with having a skill and experience. Understanding has more to do with knowing when and how to employ wisdom. Let’s look at Strong’s Concordance for a few moments then we will look at ‘first use’ of the word ‘understanding’. Understanding has to do with a body of knowledge and the ability to separate mentally (or distinguish) according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. So, we can see that having a skill and experience in something does not always mean it is appropriate to employ that skill and experience. We have to discern (distinguish) the proper use of that wisdom. This is true for the pagan but the Christian baptized in the Holy Spirit has the Spirit of Wisdom and Understanding, a Helper above all Helpers. We can and must operate at levels that just amaze and stun the world. Now let’s look at the first use of the word ‘understanding (verse six below) before I close for today.
Deuteronomy 4:1-6 (KJV)
1 Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.
2 Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.
3 Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baalpeor: for all the men that followed Baalpeor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from among you.
4 But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day.
5 Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it.
6 Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. (Bold added)
What is wisdom and understanding? Keeping the commandments of the Lord as given, adding nothing and taking away nothing (verses one and two), and cleaving unto the Lord (verse four). Sounds a lot like Deuteronomy 28 don’t you think? So, let us confess that we have the Anointing (Spirit of God) of Wisdom and Understanding in Jesus name.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow.
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
I speak this blessing over each and every one of you, receive it, believe it, doubt it not, and speak over yourself and your family in Jesus’ name!
Numbers 6:24-26 (AMP)
24 The Lord bless you and watch, guard, and keep you;
25 The Lord make His face to shine upon and enlighten you and be gracious (kind, merciful, and giving favor) to you;
26 The Lord lift up His [approving] countenance upon you and give you peace (tranquility of heart and life continually).
