THE GLORY OF THE LORD

Greeting dear and precious saints and welcome back to our empowering Bible Study of the wonderful Bible Book of Isaiah. How good is our God? He is nothing but good, the other guy, the other kingdom not so. As we are moving forward, please take a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you to expand our reach with the Truth. Thank you so much for sharing, you have a vital role with others in this Ministry, in furthering the Kingdom of God. The featured picture today is the Governor’s Mansion in Illinois and it is to remind us to pray for those in authority, all those in authority. We, the Church, must not only pray for, in a positive way, all in authority but repent for the wicked we (the Church) have helped in one way or another put in authority. If we think just showing up and voting for the candidate most closely aligned with Biblical values is the start and finish, we are sadly mistaken. Who has authority in the earth and Who backs up that authority? Once again let us review the command to pray for those in authority and the guidance given to carry out that command.
1 Timothy 2:1-4 (New Jerusalem Bible)
1 I urge then, first of all that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving should be offered for everyone,
2 for kings and others in authority, so that we may be able to live peaceful and quiet lives with all devotion and propriety.
3 To do this is right, and acceptable to God our Saviour:
4 he wants everyone to be saved and reach full knowledge of the truth.
Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text in the wonderfully Prophetic Book of Isaiah continuing to read out loud. Our God is so very good.
Isaiah 40:3-8 (KJV)
3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:
5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
6 The voice said, Cry. And he said, What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
7 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: because the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it: surely the people is grass.
8 The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.
As we move into verse five, we are told that “the glory of the LORD shall be revealed”. Let’s talk about the glory of the Lord for a bit. This is a word used commonly today. Common alternate words from a Thesaurus are magnificence, splendor, beauty, grandeur and may also be used to refer to fame, praise, triumph, success or stardom. Our Isaiah text is referring to the coming Messiah (at that time, now come) in one way or another, even the Father and for that matter the Holy Spirit. One meaning of the word or idea of the glory of God not mentioned above is the goodness of God. The ultimate goodness, the ultimate glory, of God is Jesus, the Messiah. Let’s explore this just a tad.
Exodus 33:17-23 (KJV)
17 And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
18 And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
20 And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
21 And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
22 And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
23 And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
In verse eighteen we find Moses crying out for God to show him (Moses) His glory. Notice in verse nineteen that God says He is going to show Moses His goodness. Thus, we can safely interchange the words and meaning for glory with goodness. I didn’t say so, God just did or did some 3500 years ago. The Hebrew word for glory is kābôd meaning weight, in a good sense, splendor, copiousness, or honour (old English spelling), according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Now, let’s take a closer look at the word “goodness” in verse nineteen. It is the Hebrew word ṭûb meaning good in the widest sense, especially goodness (superlatively concrete the best), beauty, gladness, welfare, fair, gladness, good (-ness, thing, -s), joy, and go well with Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Can’t you just see God, the Messiah all over this? Lord willing I will pick this up right here tomorrow, O how good is our God.
