ARE WE SALT OF THE EARTH?

Welcome back to this ongoing study of the Kingdom of God. This was a main focus of Jesus’ teaching and doing and thus should be ours as well. Jesus was the sample son, the One who showed the Church to be born on Resurrection Day how to operate. We are sons in our order to build the family name, the name of Jesus, the Kingdom of God. Jesus commanded that we were to do as He did and even greater things (John 14:12). Why? He has gone to the Father, and we are here to do the work of God, the work of the Kingdom of God. Let’s look at our focal text then move into today’s study.
Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Let me remind us all, this is a command. Now let’s move into the next teaching from the mouth of Jesus concerning the Kingdom of God. The huge take away here is that we should allow nothing to hinder our entering the Kingdom of God. Jesus also gives us a look at Hell. For those of you who think Hell is one big party, think again. Just before the passage we are about to read Jesus keeps warning us about offending new believers or allowing our hand or foot to offend us. The word offend here is where we get our English word scandal and means to entrap, trip up, stumble, or entice to sin according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Now let’s read another passage that mentions the Kingdom of God from the Masters lips.
Mark 9:47-50 (KJV)
47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:
48 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
49 For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.
50 Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
One might exclaim, all of that seems a little drastic. But which is better to lose an eye, a limb and still make Heaven or let those lusts of the flesh take us into sin and make Hell. I don’t know about you but what Jesus had to say about Hell was not attractive at all to me. One cannot be too drastic in following Christ. Moving forward, what is all this talk about salt?
Leviticus 2:13 (KJV)
13 And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.
Salt in the natural world is a preservative, a purifier, and gives foods a distinctive desirable flavor. So, it is to be for the man or woman of God. We are to preserve righteousness not only in ourselves but our culture. We are to be an example of purity before the Lord. We are to have a distinctive and desirable flavor. Because of our righteousness (right doing according to God), and our purity of walk people see the Kingdom manifest through us and want it too. We also see from context that salt is directly related to the Blood Covenant we entered at salvation. Let’s review the following passage as we end for today. Although it uses somewhat different language, perhaps not as strong as Jesus used, it is telling the same message.
1 Peter 1:13-16 (KJV)
13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Yes, it may be what the world calls a goody two shoes, but it will be the most prosperous, healthiest, happiest, peaceful life you can imagine.
TAKE HOME:
- We should allow nothing to hinder our entering the Kingdom of God. Jesus also gives us a look at Hell. For those of you who think Hell is one big party, think again.
- One might exclaim, all of that seems a little drastic. But which is better to lose an eye, a limb and still make Heaven or let those lusts of the flesh take us into sin and make Hell. I don’t know about you but what Jesus had to say about Hell was not attractive at all to me. One cannot be too drastic in following Christ.

Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
