GARMENTS OF VENGEANCE
Video link: https://youtu.be/oQwPD5Udwas
Greetings dear and precious saints of God and welcome back to this in-depth study of the wonderful Bible Book of Isaiah. The Lord is so good to give us His Word, a light to our path. We have no excuse for not knowing the ways of God and imitating them. The featured picture today is of a beautiful church building in the State of Massachusetts. I apologize for the snow but for some of my readers it is at hand. This is to remind us to pray for the body of Christ. There is a desperate need for the Truth in the body of Christ. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
Isaiah 59:16-19 (NASB)
16 And He saw that there was no man, And was astonished that there was no one to intercede; Then His own arm brought salvation to Him, And His righteousness upheld Him.
17 He put on righteousness like a breastplate, And a helmet of salvation on His head; And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.
18 According to their deeds, so He will repay, Wrath to His adversaries, recompense to His enemies; To the coastlands He will make recompense.
19 So they will fear the name of the LORD from the west And His glory from the rising of the sun, For He will come like a rushing stream Which the wind of the LORD drives.
Today we will move on with our primary text to the final phrase of the seventeenth verse, “And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle”. We are now entering a different area although it is in the same verse. Remember, the Bible was not written in chapter and verse that was added for our convenience. The first part of the verse I believe was giving us insights to the preparation for Jesus to come as Messiah and as Messiah but this phrase has to do with a benefit of His coming and Resurrection. Remember at the beginning of Jesus’ earthly Ministry and He got up to read in the Synagogue?
Luke 4:16-19 (NASB)
16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read.
17 And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written,
18 “THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED,
19 TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD.”
He is reading from the Book of Isaiah, a place we have been many times, Isaiah sixty-one.
Isaiah 61:1-2 (NASB)
1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners;
2 To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,
Did you notice that He did not read the full verse of Isaiah 61:2? Why? He was authorized under the Old Covenant to do all that preceded that phrase but vengeance or justice was a reality to come very soon at Calvary. Jesus was here to answer the sin question and to destroy the works of the devil, to get back all that Satan stole in the Garden of Eden. Vengeance upon the devil, justice for those who will serve Him.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
