WATCHMEN
GUARDIANS OF THE GATES – GUARDIANS OF TRUTH

Greetings and welcome back to this engaging study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. What a wonderful Lord we have to give us His light, His thoughts, and Words. If we are stumbling in the dark it is by our choice. Revelation is not hidden from us, but for us. Revelation is not automatic. We must seek after Him with all of our hearts. Well, 2025 is off and running, what are you changing to make this year better than last? I don’t care and I don’t think the Lord cares how good 2024 was, this year needs to be better. The featured picture is of the State House in Boise Idaho. It is pictured to remind us to pray for all in authority including those in our government. Now let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text reading out loud, yes, out loud.
Isaiah 62:6-9 (NKJV)
6 I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the LORD, do not keep silent,
7 And give Him no rest till He establishes And till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
8 The LORD has sworn by His right hand And by the arm of His strength: “Surely I will no longer give your grain As food for your enemies; And the sons of the foreigner shall not drink your new wine, For which you have labored.
9 But those who have gathered it shall eat it, And praise the LORD; Those who have brought it together shall drink it in My holy courts.”
Today we will start off with verse six of our primary Bible text as we move forward in the 62nd chapter. We started this journey studying the Book of Isaiah May 24th 2021 and what a journey it is and we still 4+ chapters to go. The Lord tells His people at the time this was uttered and then recorded by the Prophet Isaiah and us today that He has appointed watchmen. So, who are these watchmen for they are present in every generation? First a definition of a watchman. The word in Hebrew means to hedge about (as with thorns), guard; to protect, or attend to, according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. The word “watchmen” is a verb (active not passive) meaning to watch, to keep, to preserve, to guard, to be careful, to watch over, to watch carefully over, to be on one’s guard. The verb means to watch, to guard, to care for according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – Old Testament.
So, how might we think about these people? It seems to me these are to be not only present in every generation but on multiple levels in the body of Christ. By that I mean the local Church, a region, a State, a nation, and international. A watchman on a wall about a city can see into the city and can see what is happening outside the city. These people are appointed by God as guards, custodians, of the Truth. This does not relieve any of us individually from being watchmen in our own lives and families of the Truth. There is only one place the Truth is found and that is in the Word of God. I hope we can all appreciate the high degree of discipline required to preserve the integrity of the Word of God but to also rightly see and interpret what is going on outside the Church and inside the Church.
Who are these people appointed watchmen by God? It seems to me they are the Apostles, Prophets, and Teachers. One might argue that all five of the Five-Fold Ministers are watchmen and I would not quarrel vigorously with that view. I might mention that this is those appointed by God to one or more five-Fold Ministry Offices, not the self-appointed, or Church appointed Five-Fold Ministers. These men and women are vital to keeping the Truth intact and uncorrupted. They are also vital to conveying the condition of the world and the Church (local and greater) to the body of Christ. Let us not despise these watchmen. In the end each of us have a responsibility to test the spirits and to prove the Word of God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
