THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD CAUSES REST

Greetings dear children of God and those who are running from God, to those who practice love (agapē) and those who think they do. Welcome back to this enlightening, engaging, and empowering study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. The featured picture today is of the Governor’s Mansion in Lansing Michigan. The purpose is to remind us all of the importance of praying for, obeying, and honoring those in authority. Now, let’s cast our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud, yes, out loud.
Isaiah 63:14-19 (NKJV)
14 As a beast goes down into the valley, And the Spirit of the LORD causes him to rest, So You lead Your people, To make Yourself a glorious name.
15 Look down from heaven, And see from Your habitation, holy and glorious. Where are Your zeal and Your strength, The yearning of Your heart and Your mercies toward me? Are they restrained?
16 Doubtless You are our Father, Though Abraham was ignorant of us, And Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.
17 O LORD, why have You made us stray from Your ways, And hardened our heart from Your fear? Return for Your servants’ sake, The tribes of Your inheritance.
18 Your holy people have possessed it but a little while; Our adversaries have trodden down Your sanctuary.
19 We have become like those of old, over whom You never ruled, Those who were never called by Your name.
The picture being painted by Scripture in verse fourteen of an animal going into a valley to rest is likened to God leading His people to a place of rest. Now this “rest” is not the “rest” of God or the provision, this is more a cessation of activity or a pause in some activity. It can even mean a temporary respite from one’s enemies. Today one might call this a time of refreshing. These are times when the Lord Himself gives us a time to recover. This is a temporary time of calm for the faithful (not the unfaithful). This is a work of the Holy Spirit.
Deuteronomy 12:10 (KJV)
10 But when ye go over Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God giveth you to inherit, and when he giveth you rest from all your enemies round about, so that ye dwell in safety;
This was not the case for the Israelites who would not go into the Promised Land from fear but was a reality for the obedient who entered into the Promised Land. And, so it is today for those who enter into, dwell in the promises of God, and do not rebel. This shows the goodness of our God. Obedience brings rest, disobedience brings stress, restlessness, and agitation. Solomon walked in the Wisdom of God and he was at rest.
1 Kings 4:24-25 (KJV)
24 For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
25 And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
