Greetings dear ones and welcome back to this enlightening and empowering study of the Bible Book of 1st John. The Lord is really good. Of course, saying the Lord is good falls far short of His true character that we term as goodness. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text. Be sure that you are reading out loud, it is vital.
1 John 4:11-16 (KJV)
11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.
15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.
16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
Today we will be picking up with verse thirteen of our text. This Book is almost entirely about light (revealed Word) and love (agapē/agapaō) with the majority focused on love. Must be really important, we must give this our focused and purposeful attention. He tells us that there is a link between loving our brother and our knowing the He is in us and we are in Him. His Spirit in us empowers us (the Blessing) and teaches us how to exercise and mature our love. Notice the word “know” at the beginning of verse thirteen. This is a knowing not a feeling. There is way too much expression of emotion, and dependance on feelings, in many Churches. I have talked about this many times but let’s take a look at the following passage.
2 Peter 1:2-4 (KJV)
2 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
How is grace and peace multiplied? Is it by begging, crying, hollering, or having hands laid upon us? It is gained by our knowledge which requires us to diligently study rightly dividing the Word of Truth. How do all the things we need for this life and godliness come? Again, through knowledge! How do we become partakers of the divine nature which means living on a level way above the world, now and forever. It is through knowledge coupled with our faith motivated by love which makes all the promises reality in our lives. When the promises manifest in our lives we live above lust, above many of the temptations of the flesh.
As we return to our primary text and verse fourteen it seems that the Apostle John is not talking about just, he and others who witnessed the man Jesus in the earth. It seems that he is telling us that because of the things he is teaching in this Epistle that we also can see and testify “that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world”. It is a knowing not a physical sensation.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
