Greetings dear children of God and those who are running from God, to those who practice love (agapē) and those who think they do. Welcome back to this enlightening, engaging, and empowering study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. The featured picture today is of the Governor’s Mansion in St. Paul Minnasota. The purpose is to remind us all of the importance of praying for, obeying, and honoring those in authority. Now, let’s cast our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud, yes, out loud.
Isaiah 63:14-19 (NKJV)
14 As a beast goes down into the valley, And the Spirit of the LORD causes him to rest, So You lead Your people, To make Yourself a glorious name.
15 Look down from heaven, And see from Your habitation, holy and glorious. Where are Your zeal and Your strength, The yearning of Your heart and Your mercies toward me? Are they restrained?
16 Doubtless You are our Father, Though Abraham was ignorant of us, And Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name.
17 O LORD, why have You made us stray from Your ways, And hardened our heart from Your fear? Return for Your servants’ sake, The tribes of Your inheritance.
18 Your holy people have possessed it but a little while; Our adversaries have trodden down Your sanctuary.
19 We have become like those of old, over whom You never ruled, Those who were never called by Your name.
The Prophet Isaiah is imploring the Lord, the Father, to look down on them from His glorious Heaven. He says where is your zeal which is the One, we call Jesus, and where is your strength, the One, we call Holy Spirit. You say you have a yearning of the heart towards us but we are not seeing it and what about your mercy? Why are they restrained on our behalf? Of course, the answer seems obvious from our vantage some 2700 years in the future. These, His people, are not walking with Him but have been rebellious and have and are suffering the consequences.
As he, Isaiah, goes into verse sixteen he concludes that God is their Father and points out that Abraham was ignorant of them, and Israel does not acknowledge them. Abraham of course was some 1300 years prior. The Kingdoms have split into Israel and Judah about two-hundred years before this point in Isaiah. Isaiah is of the tribe of Judah, and not recognized by the ten tribes of Israel.
Isaiah 1:1 (KJV)
1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Then part way through the verse Isaiah pivots and gives praise to the Lord saying, “You, O LORD, are our Father; Our Redeemer from Everlasting is Your name”. Have you or I ever done this? Of course we have. We complain either our loud or in our minds and then we realize that is the path of the curse and pivot to acknowledging the goodness of our God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
