RESTRAIN YOURSELF O LORD

Greetings precious saints of God and welcome back to this intriguing and enabling study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. We are such a blessed people to have the Words of God, the thoughts of God to guide our way into all the blessing. Who but our God would know what Words would just as applicable now as then? Who but our God could Anoint all of His Words which when coupled with our faith would bring manifestation? The featured picture is of the Governor’s Mansion in Albany New York to remind us to pray for all in authority. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text, in you guess it, the Book of Isaiah. Please continue to read out loud, yes, out loud.
Isaiah 64:8-12 (NKJV)
8 But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand.
9 Do not be furious, O LORD, Nor remember iniquity forever; Indeed, please look–we all are Your people!
10 Your holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.
11 Our holy and beautiful temple, Where our fathers praised You, Is burned up with fire; And all our pleasant things are laid waste.
12 Will You restrain Yourself because of these things, O LORD? Will You hold Your peace, and afflict us very severely?
Finally, as we finish this sixty-fourth chapter of Isaiah, Isaiah is pleading with the Lord to restrain His anger, keep His peace, and not afflict the people severely. Mercy, compassion, can hold back the Hand of the Lord for a season with proper intercession, but without repentance the consequences of our actions (sin) must dealt with, that is justice. Now, let’s turn to chapter sixty-five.
Isaiah 65:1-5 (NKJV)
1 “I was sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was found by those who did not seek Me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I am,’ To a nation that was not called by My name.
2 I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good, According to their own thoughts;
3 A people who provoke Me to anger continually to My face; Who sacrifice in gardens, And burn incense on altars of brick;
4 Who sit among the graves, And spend the night in the tombs; Who eat swine’s flesh, And the broth of abominable things is in their vessels;
5 Who say, ‘Keep to yourself, Do not come near me, For I am holier than you!’ These are smoke in My nostrils, A fire that burns all the day.
Verse on of Isaiah sixty-five is prophetic talking of those who are not Jewish/Hebrews. Isaiah was talking to God in the prior chapter on behalf of the nation and now God responds. Remember, Israel was called of God starting with Abram/Abraham. Even in the time before Abram and following until Jesus there were Gentiles who followed after the God of Israel. A few examples that come to mind are Rahab, and Ruth but there are many more (Exodus 12:37-39). I have to admit that God has way more patience than I do. God was patient with Israel for centuries under the Old Covenant and now some two thousand years since Jesus and their rejection of the Christ. If you have read the gospels, you know that the Jews were not serving God when Jesus walked the earth. As we finish verse two of our text, we see that the people are walking according to their own thoughts, not the thoughts of God.
Proverbs 14:12 (KJV)
12 There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
What about those who profess Jesus today?
Lord willing, I will pick up right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
