DENOMINATIONS – PART THREE

Greetings dear ones and welcome back to The Three Minute Word and our study of Denominations, splits, divisions in the body of Christ, the Church (ekklesia). We are pursuing the question as to if these divisions are of God or not. It seems that these divisions occur when there is a divergence from Truth or perhaps another Truth is rediscovered. We now know that divisions were happening in the first century AD. Oh, how soon the Truth is corrupted and man with the help of others and the Devil follow after the flesh and human reasoning not Truth. I left off last Sunday with the following question. Are we good Bereans?
Acts 17:11 (NIV)
11 Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
Are we examining what we hear to determine if it is the Truth? Could it be that we too readily accept the word of others? I am not saying not to listen to others God has put in our lives. I am saying we must test it before we allow it to become part of us. We test it against other Scriptures. We need to find two or three witnesses to the same thing presented as Truth. That is two or three different human authors not the same human author in two or three different places. All Scripture is authored of God through human vessels. Now, let’s move forward.
1 Thessalonians 5:19-23 (NIV)
19 Do not put out the Spirit’s fire;
20 do not treat prophecies with contempt.
21 Test everything. Hold on to the good.
22 Avoid every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
As commanded in verse twenty-one of this passage we are to test everything and only hold on to the good? The good would be the Truth. Let’s not allow that word “everything” in verse twenty-one escape our attention. The Holy Spirit through the Apostle Paul is telling them as well as you and me to “Test everything”, nothing is to go untested. What about verse twenty-two? Are we continually mindful of evil and righteousness, avoiding all that is evil. Evil is anything no in accordance with Scripture, period. Don’t get caught up in the web or “oh it is not so bad; it is just a little”.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Sunday with our discussion of Denominations. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
