WHAT ABOUT TONGUES? – PART EIGHT
Video link: https://youtu.be/6jU7Rg1_cSM
Greetings precious saints of God, all peoples, and welcome back to week eight of our Bible Study of speaking in tongues. The Lord is so good dear ones. He has given us another mechanism to uncover mysteries in our lives and even for the benefit of all mankind. This use of tongues should be a major way in which it is used and not to show other how spiritual we are. Today I am continuing with the Lords’ letter the Church at Corinth via the Apostle Paul. This letter is an admonition (rebuke) and if he were on the earth today many Pentecostal Churches would be getting a letter as well.
1 Corinthians 14:16-20 (NIV)
16 If you are praising God with your spirit, how can one who finds himself among those who do not understand say “Amen” to your thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
17 You may be giving thanks well enough, but the other man is not edified.
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.
I have presented this passage in the NIV which is a little easier to understand than the KJV. I remember years ago before I was baptized in the Holy Spirit there was a man right behind me that spoke in tongues throughout the song service and to be honest it was quite aggravating. As we come into verse eighteen, we see that the Apostle is not forbidding tongues but to be fully aware of your surroundings, who is around. It is not a badge of spirituality. He goes on in verse nineteen telling us to speak intelligible (understandable) words in the Church. Then in verse twenty, if I may paraphrase, He says to grow up. Let’s go a few more verses as I close for today.
1 Corinthians 14:23-25 (KJV)
23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
Do we see the difference between tongues without an interpreter and prophecy? Do we want fellow believers from a Church that does not have tongues or unbelievers to think we are mad? Is that our testimony? Does that build the Kingdom or cause one to desire what we have?
TAKE HOME:
- Do not speak in tongues among the unlearned or unbelievers unless it is a message to the Church with an interpreter present.
- The main message must convey knowledge in the native language of those present.
- Grow up, the misuse of tongues does not further the Kingdom of God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
