WHO WILL HEARKEN

Greetings dear and precious saints of God and welcome back to this wonderful Bible Study of the Book of Isaiah. What a wonderful Book, but of course they all are! God is so good to us, to illuminate our path. This is His good path! We are a rebellious people like our first father the devil. We are born with a fallen and rebellious spirit and a flesh concerned about self. Any of you who had had children know that rebellion is innate in the child. They are way better at learning the word “no” than “yes”. What about you and me? Please take a moment and share this teaching as widely as possible by every means available to you. Thank you so much for sharing. The featured picture today is of my beautiful wife Donna and me at The Guenther House here in San Antonio. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
Isaiah 42:21-25 (KJV)
21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.
22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore.
23 Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?
24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.
25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.
How many teachings, sermons, have we heard in the physical but not in the spiritual? For whatever reason we did not discipline ourselves to focus and see how it applied to us. It certainly applied to us for that is why the Lord had that particular teaching or sermon for that particular day. We were there. O no, one might say, “we would rather it was for the other guy”. ‘They really need it but I’m so wonderful”. Really? One might even say, “I have heard all of this before”. The question is this. Are you doing it? Perhaps about now you are thinking I should have skipped this one and found someone to tickle my ears. As we look at verse 23 of our text it might seem that the words hearken and hear are the same, a duplicate word but they are not. The word “hearken” is the word transliterated from the Hebrew as qāshab meaning to prick up the ears according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. The word “hear” is the word transliterated from the Hebrew as shāmaʿ meaning to hear intelligently (often with implication of attention, obedience, attentively, and carefully according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. Let’s look and listen to the following carefully (you are reading out loud, right).
Proverbs 4:20-24 (KJV)
20 My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
21 Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
22 For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
The word “attend” in verse twenty is translated as “hearken” in our primary text. Seems like giving the Word of God full, proper attention results in life and in health. This is not life as in conscious upon the earth but thriving in the abundance of God, life as God has life, days of Heaven upon the earth. This takes diligence, constantly keeping our face towards God. Our life is going to issue from what we give attendance to. Let’s look at our individual lives and we will know in a moment what we have given attendance too. Verse twenty-four above gives us the caution to say nothing that conflicts with the Word of God, again nothing! The Israelites from our text in Isaiah have not chosen wisely, they have chosen the curse in deception and they have spoken with a froward and perverse mouth. Recorded or not, the fruit tells us the seed that was cast.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next week. Remember we love you and there is nothing you can do about it.
