Greetings precious saints of God and welcome back to this wonderful Bible Study of the Book of 1st John. Written by the Apostle of love as moved upon by the Holy Spirit. It is said in Church history that of the original Apostles, John is the only one to die a natural peaceful death. One might want to ask why. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text.
1 John 2:3-8 (KJV)
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
Am I, are you, keeping His commandments? Now start that false doctrine of “but Dr. Wood we’re under Grace not under the Law”. The initial law of “sin and death” has been dealt with however all of the moral law remains and we get great guidance from the civil law. We are not on our own to keep the law but we have Grace, the Holy Spirit, to help us. We, the New Testament born again saint, can walk in true Godly love which was not possible before under the Old Covenant. Not Old in that it is not applicable but old in that it came before the new with significant limitations. Having said that one cannot miss the fact that God took really good care of those who served Him in their natural life and in their death (Bosom of Abraham). The center pieces of the New Covenant are the Blood of Jesus, the crushing defeat of Satan, the Resurrection (assuring ours), the coming of the Holy Spirit to inhabit every believer, and eradication of the Law of Sin and Death.
John is pretty blunt in verse four. We need way more pastors that are not afraid to be blunt. Pussy toeing around things is not love it is fear and is a disgrace and beyond that sin and a sign that they indeed do not love God. The One who knowingly does not obey the Lord and says they love God is a liar. In addition, the Truth is not in them. They may have a knowledge of the Truth but it is not revelation, it is not in them, and they are not doing it. When something is not in us, something else is our first response and the Truth secondary when we remember the information on how to respond.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember the Lord is nothing but good, He is Love, and He cannot lie.
