Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud. Yes, out loud, you know why.
1 John 2:10-14 (KJV)
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
12 I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.
13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.
As we move into verse twelve there appears to be a shift and the love Apostle refers to us as “little children”. I’m not sure that is a term of endearment, it is more likely a statement of our spiritual condition. He reaffirms that this letter is for the Church, the body of Christ with this term. He makes it even more solid or definite by stating we are the forgiven. Just as natural children must be taught how to be productive members in the natural world so do we need instruction to be productive sons and daughter in the spiritual world, the Kingdom of God.
In verses thirteen and fourteen the Apostle seems to be addressing three groups of people. First those he calls the “fathers” because they were there, seeing and hearing Jesus or perhaps the original twelve. Next is the young men who were not there at the beginning just as none of us were there at the beginning. Thirdly are the newly saved referred to as “little children” also. John emphasis, the Holy Spirit through him, that a sign of the Word (which is love and light) abiding in one is they are strong and overcome the evil one. So, what if one is not overcoming the evil one? We will see stealing, killing, and destroying in their lives. Time in Church or knowledge of the Word of God is not the key. The key is living the Word.
Revelation 3:20-22 (KJV)
20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.
22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
Overcoming is inseparable from having close communion, intimacy with the Master. This is a time to judge oneself.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. The Lord is good, nothing but good, and He cannot lie.
By: Dr. David R. Wood, Bible Teacher, and Prophetic Voice
2 Chronicles 20:20 b (KJV)
20 … Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.
Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 (KJV)
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
