THE TRUTH – THE WORD – IN US AND WITH US FOREVER

Greetings to all and welcome back to our study of the Bible Book of 2nd John. I often refer to the Apostle John as the Apostle of love, it is all through the gospel of John as well as his three epistles. It is love, divine level love, that brought redemption to all who will receive it, and love of God is what will take us to Heaven. This is the love (agapē/ agapaō) that only God (three persons) and His children can manifest, walk in. This love is manifest by obedience to the Word of God, living a selfless lifestyle, and abiding in Blood Covenant with God. This love emanates from our will based upon our knowledge of this love. This love is not emotion based but emotions may be expressed secondarily. Now, let’s dive into our primary text in 2nd John.
2 John 1:1-3 (KJV)
1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;
2 For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.
3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.
Last Friday we dealt with the phrase “For the truth’s sake” and established that we could accurately say for the sake of Jesus. Let me remind you and me of the following passage once again.
1 John 4:19-21 (KJV)
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
The word love/loved used six times in this passage is Divine love (agapē/agapaō) which only God and the children are capable of expressing. How did Jesus/God love us? He loved us by obeying Scripture. There are many prophesies telling, promising His coming. He did not need a Savior so acted entirely in our best interest; He was selfless. He fulfilled the requirements of Blood Covenant which started in the Garden of Eden and was consummated with Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah in the 22nd Chapter of Genesis. You see, the definition of love (agapē/agapaō) does not change because it is applied to God. What about 1st John 4:21? Review Matthew 22:36-40, Leviticus 19:18, and Deuteronomy 6:5.
As we wind down for today what about the terminal phrase of 2nd John 1:2 “which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever”? Does Jesus dwell within us? No. Yes, I know we have been told that many times. Who does dwell within us at salvation? The Holy Spirit. How does Jesus dwell within us? He is the Word, the Word dwells within us. That is our revealed knowledge of God and the Son. The Holy Spirit who dwells within points to Jesus, to the Word, to the Truth. Let me complicate this a little further. The spiritual reality which is hard to comprehend is that when One of the persons of God inhabits us, we have all three for they are One. One last point on verse two. Not only will the Holy Spirit dwell with us and in us forever (eternity) but the Word of God (revealed knowledge). We are going to need the Word of God forever, may as well learn as much as possible now. The quality of our lives here in the earth and our rewards/rank in the hereafter is directly related to the revealed Word we know and act upon in faith, walking in love, led of the Holy Spirit.
TAKE HOME:

- Not only will the Holy Spirit dwell with us and in us forever (eternity) but the Word of God (revealed knowledge). We are going to need the Word of God forever, may as well learn as much as possible now.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
