COME DOWN

Greetings dear children of God and those who are running from God, to those who practice love (agapē) and those who think they do. Welcome back to this enlightening, engaging, and empowering study of the Bible Book of Isaiah. The featured picture today is of the Governor’s Mansion in Helena Montana. The purpose is to remind us all of the importance of praying for, obeying, and honoring those in authority. Now, let’s cast our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud, yes, out loud.
Isaiah 64:1-4 (KJV)
1 Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,
2 As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence!
3 When thou didst terrible things which we looked not for, thou camest down, the mountains flowed down at thy presence.
4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.
The Prophet Isaiah is crying out on behalf of the people for the Lord to come down and their adversaries could see His Mighty Power. Remember, Isaiah is God’s Prophet to the people, the people don’t even know to cry out unless they are told. Dear ones I don’t know that we understand the extent to which we are dependent upon God, even in a fallen state, and perhaps more so as Christians. These people were no doubt familiar with the account of God coming down and meeting with Moses on Mt. Sinai many years before.
Exodus 19:16-18 (KJV)
16 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.
17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount.
18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
They are crying out for God to show Himself to them and their adversaries yet the last time this is what they said.
Exodus 20:18-21 (KJV)
18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
As I conclude for today, it appears in verse three of our primary Bible text that they are alluding to the events of the Exodus. First there were the 10 plagues, then the great transfer of wealth, the healing of all the people (none feeble among them), the splitting and crossing of the Red Sea followed by the destruction of the Egyptian army, and culminating in God coming down on Mount Sinai. Yet they immediately (golden calf) went into idolatry and unbelief. Signs and wonders do not build faith, hearing and hearing the Word of God builds faith.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next week. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
