DENOMINATIONS – PART ONE
Video link: https://youtu.be/kzwK7Yfangw
Greetings dear saints of God, all who have come to this teaching and welcome back to The Three Minute Word blog. The Lord is so good and I hope we can all agree longsuffering. Today and for the next few weeks I will be discussing divisions in the Church otherwise known as denominations. I suspect that when many of us think of divisions in the Church we think along the lines of Church splits. Others may also see a division as another Denomination they believe to be in serious error. Something I want to establish up front is that divisions and differences are two separate things. The Apostle Paul discusses differences when he talks about the eye, the ear, and so on. He affirms they are all part of the same body and in fact are interdependent. Do we view a denomination different from ours in this fashion?
Denominations are recognized autonomous branches of the Christian Church according to the dictionary definition. The lie is that the coming about of the various denominations was good, especially the denomination with which you identify. We know that divisions occurred in the very early Church, in the lifetime of the Apostle Paul.
1 Corinthians 1:10-13 (KJV)
10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.
11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you.
12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ.
13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
Looking at verse twelve, how is this different than saying I am Methodist or I am Baptist, and so on? Are we all not to be of Christ Jesus? Divisions, denominations, are the work of Satan. As we have read down through the preceding passage, I was most struck by verse thirteen and I quote, “Is Christ divided?” This was going on in the Church at Corinth in the first century A.D.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here with more about Denominations, divisions in the Church next Sunday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
