WHAT ABOUT TONGUES? – PART FOUR

Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our Sunday Bible Study currently teaching about speaking in other tongues. To say that this is a controversial topic would be an understatement at best. Last week I made the point that we were never called to be Pentecostals (which is not a denomination) or any denomination. We were called to be Christians, Anointed followers of Christ. The very title or description of a believer as a Christian implies an Anointing by the use of the word “Christ” in the title. Commonly when speaking in tongues comes up, it is tied to the day of Pentecost in the Book of Acts.

Acts 2:1-4 (KJV)

1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.

4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

There are several other occasions recorded in the Book of Acts of speaking in tongues when people were filled with the Holy Spirit. Notice the people spoke (a freewill choice) and the Spirit gave them the words or language. When a person first speaks in tongues, we use the term “initial evidence” indicating that the person has received and has been filled with the Holy Spirit. Since the Church has majored on tongues and not the Power. Jesus majored on the Power only mentioning the speaking in tongues with His departing Words in Mark 16:17. Jesus had promised the Holy Spirit, the Comforter (one like Him) would come upon them and they would be filled with power. The word “power” in Acts 1:8 is “dynamis” according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. This power or dynamis is the Holy Spirit, the One without limits. So are we without limits.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Being a witness of Jesus Christ is much more than giving our testimony and encouraging people to be saved. We are supposed to look like Jesus doing as He did and the greater things (John 14:12). This freewill speaking in tongues with the filling of the Holy Spirit is the evidence that we have received Power. The infilling or baptism of the Holy Spirit can occur in a public meeting or in solitude. This tongues are commonly referred to as our prayer language as distinguished from the gift of tongues spelled out in 1^st Corinthians chapter twelve.

TAKE HOME:

The Church has majored on the speaking in tongues
Jesus majored on receiving Power to do the work of the Kingdom of God.
The capability to speak in tongues at the filling of the Holy Spirit is speaking the Words of God, the perfect prayer.
