Greetings and welcome back to our ongoing study of The Kingdom of God, what a journey. Let’s get right to our anchor Scripture for this study then move forward.
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
It is imperative that we see this Scripture as an order from the King of kings. We must be asking ourselves things like, what are or is my assignment from Heaven here in the earth. Dear one, it is more than show at Church here and there and throw a few bucks into the offering plate. Are we asking ourselves how the various aspects of all of our lives fit with the will of God. Do we see our job as serving people or the way to get a paycheck? When we mow the lawn, is it a chore or a stewardship responsibility that pleases the Lord? Now, let’s move back to the Luke chapter nine text we have been dealing with.
Luke 9:26-27 (NKJV)
26 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own glory, and in His Father’s, and of the holy angels.
27 “But I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.”
In verse twenty-six it seems that Jesus is speaking to these disciples and what lies just ahead but He is also speaking to us. This is sowing and reaping. Sowing shame reaps shame. Jesus does not say they are lost and going to Hell, but it seems that neither will they be at the head of the line. To me the timing of the (b) portion of this verse could either be speaking of the Rapture or the Second Coming but I guess I favor the Second Coming. However, other translations make it seem like Jesus was saying none of you are going to die until you see the Day of Pentecost as I discussed in a prior teaching. I now want to deal with this issue or idea of not tasting death. Is He talking about physical or spiritual death and can death be tasted. The word “tasted” here can also be translated as to partake.
John 8:51 (KJV)
51 Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.
When John records the same event we find the word “see” in place of taste. The words partake and see convey the best message I think for our time and use of language. Also, I think this verse makes it clear that Jesus is speaking of spiritual death. We know it for millions of Christians who kept His sayings, have seen or partaken of physical death since that time.
Hebrews 2:9 (KJV)
9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
Here Scripture tells us that Jesus tasted (saw, partook of) spiritual death for all mankind. He died spiritually so that we do not have too. Let’s explore a little further touching on the idea of the “second death”.
Revelation 20:6 (KJV)
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
Praise God you and I are part of the “first resurrection” and the “second death” the eternal death of the spirit in the lake of fire has no power over us.
Revelation 21:8 (KJV)
8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
The unbeliever is dead spiritually and upon physical death goes into Hell awaiting the White Throne Judgement. At the White Throne Judgement and justice is meted out they then go into the Lake of Fire, the second death.
TAKE HOME:
- Seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness first is a command from the Head of the Church, what is our response.
- The Kingdom of God has come in Power, are we teaching and walking in that Power?
- The second death which is eternity in the lake of fire has no place for the believer.
Lord willing, I will resume right here tomorrow. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
