Greetings dear and precious friends and saints and welcome back to this teaching from 1st John. Teaching from the “little Johns” has been on my mind for some time and now the Lord has pulled the trigger. Please take a moment and share this, and all other teachings, as widely as possible by every means available to you. Thank you so much for sharing. The Lord is so good, to give us His Word, to shine light on His abundant path for our lives. Before I move to our primary Bible text, let me remind you all of two things. Now let’s turn our full attention to our primary Bible text for today. Are you reading out loud? Yes, out loud.
1 John 1:5-10 (KJV)
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
As we resume our study of this wonderful Book let me remind you that the Holy Spirit is speaking to Christians through the Apostle John. Let’s pick up with verse six. He, our Heavenly Father, is talking to me and to you. Even though the “him” in this verse is not capitalized as it should be, it is referring to God. To fellowship means to participate with in various activities, in this case God. Interestingly this word “fellowship” is singular in number and feminine in gender. This is a one-on-one thing with the Lord. The feminine gender indicates that this fellowship has the potential for producing increase. Referring back to last weeks teaching be reminded that the first mention of darkness is Genesis 1:2 and the second Genesis 1:5 meaning misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow, or wickedness. It is my observation that generally this word “darkness” from our text is taken to mean sin. However, I hope we all can see that it means way more than that, certainly an inconvenient Truth. The Apostle John is saying that if these things noted above are in our lives we are lying about fellowshipping with the Lord and we are not doing the truth which is love (agapē). I didn’t say all this, the Lord did through the Apostle John.
