Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our study of this Book of love, 1st John. As you will recall we are in the second chapter of this wonderful Book. Let’s go ahead and read our primary Bible text out loud, yes, out loud, you know why.
1 John 2:17-19 (KJV)
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Many false religions either deny Jesus all together or deny Him as Messiah like the Muslims. However, there are many that do not believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. Let’s look again at the definition of antichrist. “Antichrist, literally an opposer of Christ or one who usurps the place of Christ, found only in John’s epistles and collectively meaning all who deny that Jesus is the Messiah and that the Messiah is come in the flesh.” According to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament. Now let’s take a look at what the word Christ means. Christ means anointed, i.e. the Messiah, an epithet of Jesus according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. An epithet is something that characterizes a person, in this case Jesus is the Anointed One, the Messiah. The One and only who could take away the sins of the world. Thank you so much Jesus.
As we look at the nineteenth verse it seems that the Apostle John is not talking about all antichrists but only those who were once a part of the Christian Church, confessing in one way or another that they were followers of Christ Jesus. But, over time they left the Church, not just changing from one Church to another, but left the Christian Church all together to the point of denying Christ. Let’s look at this verse in the NIV.
1 John 2:19 (NIV)
19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.
It is not clear if they once believed then changed their minds or was it that they never believed. Perhaps it was just the thing to do at the time. As we mediate on this verse it seems that the Apostle John is saying, if they were a true believer they would never have left. It seems that they were never saved just playing the part for a time. Perhaps you have seen this in your own circles. This brings us to a verse that is very easy to misinterpret if we do not study.
1 John 2:20 (KJV)
20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
On the surface it appears to say that because we have the Holy Spirit, we know all things. Let’s look at the NIV.
1 John 2:20 (NIV)
20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.
This brings the verse into better focus indicating that because we have the Holy Spirit we have been led into the Truth. The Truth in this case is that Jesus is the Messiah. Must keep in context. We don’t know all things about all things because we are born again but we do know that Jesus is Messiah.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
