Welcome to Awake, Arise, and Triumph Ministries and this ongoing study of 2nd John. What a book so rich with Truth from Heaven through this Apostle of love. Without further ado let’s move forward and plunge into our golden text.
2 John 1:9-11 (KJV)
9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
Last Friday we dealt with verse nine and the Truth that Jesus was and is the Messiah and that He did come in the flesh. Being Messiah means that He is the Lamb of God past present and future who has taken away the sins of the world. In reality it was accomplished from the foundation of the world. He came as a man having laid aside all the advantage of God. He lived a sinless life and died spiritually first when He was made sin, then physically when He yielded (it was not taken) up His Spirit to the care of the Father. This same verse, 2nd John 1:9, tells us that if we don’t believe this, we are not saved but if we do we have both the Father and the Son. This verse does not mention it but of course we have the Holy Spirit as well who came to dwell within when we made Jesus Lord. Moving forward let’s read verses ten and eleven again.
2 John 1:10-11 (KJV)
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
This appears to be, and is in fact, pretty stout instruction. The Apostle makes it clear that when someone seeks to come into fellowship with us, our group, we must be clear on exactly what they believe. For if they come with a different doctrine, we are not to receive them into fellowship considering them a true believer or fellow believer. We are to consider then as an unbeliever. They are not a son of God, they have a different father like the Pharisees Jesus encountered, their father was the Devil. Take a look at this passage in the Passion Translation and then in the New Jerusalem Bible for further clarity.
2 John 1:9 (PassionNTPsa)
10 So if anyone comes into your fellowship claiming to be a true believer yet doesn’t bring this teaching, you are not to consider him as a fellow believer, nor should you welcome him into your homes.
11 For if you welcome him as a believer, you will be partnering with him in his evil agenda.
In the New Jerusalem we see that the translation of the term God speed has to do with a greeting, an acceptance into fellowship.
2 John 1:10-11 (NJB)
10 If anyone comes to you bringing a different doctrine, you must not receive him into your house or even give him a greeting.
11 Whoever greets him has a share in his wicked activities.
We are to have no fellowship with wickedness. There is to be no appearance that we are in relationship (fellow sons of God) and not fellowship or have communion with such as with other believers. They are not to have a part in a meeting of believers beyond what is afforded other unbelievers who may be present and in need of light (revelation knowledge), salvation. Another place this hits home is in politics. We do not vote for these folks. Frequently they also endorse abortion, infringement on the Second Amendment, and lack of support for Israel. Don’t vote for mammon, vote for righteousness.
TAKE HOME:
- Jesus is the Messiah, the Lamb of God, come in the flesh.
- Jesus came as a man, lived a sinless life, gave Himself willingly as a sacrifice taking our sin, being made sin, suffering the consequences of spiritual death, and finally surrendering His physical life into the Hand of the Father with full confidence in the Father, in the Word, in Justice.
- We are to have no fellowship with those who do not confess that Jesus is the Messiah come in the flesh. We are not talking about political expediency but one in whom we can see that Jesus is Lord, is their Messiah and their life reflects His righteousness.
Lord willing, I will resume right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
