Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our study of this Book of love, 1st John. As you will recall we are in the second chapter of this wonderful Book. Let’s go ahead and read our primary Bible text out loud, yes, out loud, you know why.
1 John 2:17-19 (KJV)
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Last Friday we left off speaking about verse seventeen of our primary text. First, we see that this world, this present physical creation at some point will cease to exist. Listen to the Apostle Peter.
2 Peter 3:9-11 (KJV)
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
Yes indeed, “what manner of person ought ye to be”? Next in our primary text we see that the lusts associated with this present world will also pass away. Thank you, Jesus! This word transliterated from Greek to English as lust is a fem. noun from meaning to desire greatly, a strong desire, longing, or lust according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament. We also find it defined as a longing (especially for what is forbidden) according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. We can lust or desire strongly what is good or we can lust for or strongly desire that which is sin. First an example of the good, then an example of the bad.
Luke 22:15 (KJV)
15 And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
Mark 4:19 (KJV)
19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
All too often perhaps our minds go to sexual desires when we see the word lust. We can lust for all sorts of things as noted in Mark 4:19 above other than what is forbidden in Scripture sexually.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
