1 JOHN – 3:14
WE MUST MASTER SIN, WE MUST MASTER LOVE

Greetings to all of the House of God and welcome back to these enlightening, instructive, and empowering teachings from the Book of 1st John. The Lord is so good to give us the Policy and Procedure Manual for the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom of God if you haven’t noticed is not loosey goosy but a Kingdom of laws. Obeyed these laws bring prosperity, health, safety, and eternal life. When these laws are not followed the curse enters with its attendant poverty, poor health, lack of safety, and eternal damnation. Just a note about poverty. I am not talking about life on the streets, under a bridge. When one does not have an inheritance for their children and grandchildren as well as a continual overflow in their own life to shine (Isaiah 60 & 61) and further the Kingdom of God, they are in poverty. Poverty is of the wicked one, overflowing abundance is of God. It is everywhere in Scripture. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
1 John 3:11-15 (KJV)
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
Today I am picking up with verse fourteen. Really think about this verse, it should be quite sobering. Many people are comforted falsely by having said the so-called sinner’s prayer and going to Church regular but in reality, are not saved. Whether they were ever saved is not in by field of responsibility, as is said, it is above my paygrade. Perhaps most of you have heard there is a difference between loving (agapaō) a person and liking a person. Some people grate on you and it is an all-day job loving these people. It seems that the problem is not so much with them as within ourselves. We must constantly remind ourselves that God loves them just like He loves us, and just like He loves Jesus. Jesus paid the same price for them as us. They like us are in the image and likeness of God. They like us have a vital place to occupy in the Kingdom of God. Their rough edges are between them and God just as ours are between us and God. One who habitually without repentance hates, loves not his brother is spiritually dead. There is great danger in not loving one another. Sometimes we just have to do it as a function of our will, intentionally, on purpose. It may not feel good but we are not guided by feelings but by the Word of God.
Verse fifteen is even more harsh on the surface. It seems that the Apostle wants to drive home for our sake and that of the Kingdom of God how important love (agapē/agapaō) of God and love of others is to our life in the earth now, and eternity. The Lord through the Apostle of love says that we are murders if we hate (detest or persecute) our brother. He goes on to say that in that state eternal life does not exist. This state of mind may or may not involve an actual murder (killing of another) but it is the same spirit abiding, being allowed to abide (live) with us. Let’s remind ourselves of what God said to Cain.
Genesis 4:7 (NIV)
7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”
We must master love, subduing the spirit of hate, of murder and exercising the fruit of love as well as the other eight fruits of the spirit. What will we do, it is our choice, will we choose life or death?
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday after a brief word about the assignation of President Kennedy. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
