Greetings precious children of God, my brothers and sisters in Christ, and welcome back to our Bible Study of 1st John. What a wonderful Book of love and light. God is love and God is light. We were made in the image and likeness of God therefore we are to be love and light in Christ Jesus. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text, reading it out loud.
1 John 5:1-4 (KJV)
1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.
The word “believeth” in the first verse is more than having information about Jesus and believing it, it is a belief based upon the revelation (rhema Word) that Jesus is the Christ. It is exactly what happens at salvation.
Romans 10:9-10 (KJV)
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
As we continue in the verse is seems more convoluted than it needs to be in the King James. The One who begat is the Father and Jesus is that is begotten of the Father. By the way the love spoken of here is this highest-level love expressed by God and His children. We love God by doing His commandments, having a selfless lifestyle, and abiding in Blood Covenant. It is not an emotional thing, a feeling thing at all. There may be a secondary emotional component but it is not initiated nor fueled by emotion. The Apostle tells us that a natural spiritual outflow of loving God is loving Gods’ other children in verse two. The Apostle of love is making sure that we do not miss this love thing.
As we enter the third verse, he by the unction of the Holy Spirit tells us that love of God is keeping His commandments. This is the core of our relationship with God. We should not expect anything from God if we are doing as He has commanded. Another word for love in this context is obedience. If we are not receiving the promises of God then we must examine our love (obedience) walk and not lean into a perverse false religious explanation of our failure. These explanations shift the blame to God one way or another. It is never God’s fault. Finally in this verse the Apostle of love (obedience to God’s commands) assures us that His commands are not grievous or burdensome. The way of the world is hard but not in the Kingdom.
Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
If this is not true in your or my life, we are serving another master, not the Father and His Son Jesus the Christ.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
