Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our study of this Book of love, 1st John. As you will recall we are in the second chapter of this wonderful Book. Let’s go ahead and read our primary Bible text out loud, yes, out loud, you know why.
1 John 2:17-19 (KJV)
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Last Friday we left off speaking about verse seventeen of our primary text. First, we saw that this world, this present physical creation at some point will cease to exist. Second, we saw that the lusts of this world, this present age, will also pass away. Thirdly, we saw that those who do the will of God live, or abide, forever. Let’s look at how The Living Bible handles this verse.
1 John 2:17 (TLB)
17 And this world is fading away, and these evil, forbidden things will go with it, but whoever keeps doing the will of God will live forever.
The Living Bible is a paraphrase, presenting ideas, thoughts for thoughts, not a word for word translation like the King James Version of Scripture. However, it does bring forward the idea with a bit more clarity that continuing to do the will of God is essential to living forever. All translations leave open the idea that one can choose not to do the will of God and they will cease to live forever. This idea is further strengthened by the use of the conjunctive “but” in the verse. These are sobering Truths. We must take Scripture way more seriously.
I will now move forward into verses eighteen and nineteen where the Apostle of love makes a change in direction.
1 John 2:18-19 (KJV)
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
As we plunge into this area let’s look first at the word “antichrist” even though it is self-evident on the surface. Antichrist, literally an opposer of Christ or one who usurps the place of Christ, found only in John’s epistles and collectively meaning all who deny that Jesus is the Messiah and that the Messiah is come in the flesh according to The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament. It is thought that this Epistle was written between 95 and 110 AD, near the end of this Apostles life. One source estimates the death of John to be about 98 AD when he was 88 years old. If there were many antichrists then, what about now. Notice in the definition it mentions that those who deny Jesus came in the flesh are antichrist. This is based on Scripture.
1 John 4:2-3 (KJV)
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
There are many around the world we deny that Jesus is the Messiah and/or that He came in the flesh. Many who claim Jesus as Savior and Lord don’t believe that He came as an ordinary man and operated as a man in the earth. They believe He took upon Himself flesh but that He was fully God and functioned as God in the earth, in His earthly Ministry. He was fully God before the womb of Mary, He was fully man from the womb until the Resurrection, and now He is fully man and fully God. The Scripture is replete with evidence of this Truth. He had to be a man just like Adam, yet without sin, in order to satisfy the debt of sin for mankind sin.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
