Greetings dear ones and welcome back to our study of this Book of love, 1st John. As you will recall we are in the second chapter of this wonderful Book. Let’s go ahead and read our primary Bible text out loud, yes, out loud, you know why.
1 John 2:17-19 (KJV)
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.
Last Friday we left off speaking about verse seventeen of our primary text. First, we saw that this world, this present physical creation at some point will cease to exist. Next, we saw that the lusts of this world were also going to pass away. Perhaps we all had a great sigh of relief thinking then that sin will no longer be possible. Is that true? When we go to Heaven is sin possible? During the Millennial Reign will it be possible for us to sin? What about with the coming of the new earth and the new heaven? Let me remind you that Lucifer was not created a sinful spiritually dead being but Lucifer had a freewill. Unfortunately, he lusted in a negative way to be not only like God but greater than God. We have no idea as to the length of time between the creation of Lucifer and when iniquity was found in him but he lusted in a sinful way and was cast from Heaven.
Ezekiel 28:14-16 (KJV)
14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.
15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.
16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.
Will we have freewill after we depart this very corrupted physical body? Could we sin one day in the eternal future? Here is some good news now that your heads are spinning, we will not have a tempter as did Adam and Eve. Could another “tempter” arise in the future? People and angels have freewill now and forever more.
As I close for today, what about the last phrase of verse seventeen “but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever”? What about those who are not doing the will of God? I would be very careful about jumping to the conclusion that all Christians, ourselves included, are doing the will of God. Let’s ask ourselves, what is the fruit of my life. Is the blessing the fruit of our life or the curse, or a mixture? Again, read Deuteronomy 28 or John 10:10 very carefully. In the will of God is only blessing, out of the will of God is only the curse.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
