Greeting dear and precious saints of God, little children as the Apostle John refers to us, and welcome back to these enlightening and empowering teachings of 1st John. The Lord is so good little ones. Are we seeing and listening to these Scriptures to understand, guard in our hearts, and do or is it more of a religious exercise for the day? The Words of God which we make our own take us one direction, a very good direction, but the words of the world perverted by the original pervert take us in an altogether different direction. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text for today continuing to read out loud.
1 John 3:11-15 (KJV)
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.
13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
As we examine verse eleven of our primary text one might ask as to when was the beginning. I suspect that love for other of Gods’ children started in the Garden of Eden. The first mention specifically of loving our neighbor is in the following verses.
Leviticus 19:17-18 (NASB)
17 ‘You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him.
18 ‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the sons of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself; I am the LORD.
Let me point out something that we have discussed before, which is that a fallen man is not capable of the highest-level love, Godly love, as they had in the Garden and we have with salvation. The reason for that is that love is a fruit of the spirit. From the fall until salvation the spirit of men was dead unable to express any of the fruits of the spirit. The word translated as love in the Old Testament is a general term indicating friendship and affection. These are a function of the soul. The soul is a part of the spirit man but not the part that communes with God or contains the fruit of the spirit. The soul is the location of the mind, will, and emotions. However, with the coming of Christ, the coming of salvation, the making alive of our spirit we are capable of supernatural love (agapē/agapaō) and are expected to exercise this love just like our Heavenly Father.
John 15:12-15 (NASB)
12 “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.
13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
14 “You are My friends if you do what I command you.
15 “No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.
As I close look at verse fourteen above. We have seen in Scripture that if we love (agapē/agapaō) God we keep His commandments (John 14:15) but here we see that to be called a friend of God we must “do what I command you”. Remember, this love (agapē/agapaō) has three major prongs, one is to obey His commandments, two is to have selfless motivations, and three is to abide in Blood Covenant. As we contemplate this consider verse fifteen as well and ask yourself if you know what the Master is doing.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
