BEING A GOOD BEREAN

Greetings precious saints of God and welcome back to this enlightening, empowering, and instructive study of 1st John. The Lord is so good to give us His thoughts, Words, and ways and the capacity to do as He does. Thanksgiving Day is behind us and I suspect many are knee deep in leftovers. Christmas will have come and gone before the next teaching on 1st John and the New Year will be looming just ahead. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
1 John 4:1-3 (KJV)
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Let me point our something that I think will help with understanding this passage. All people have a spirit part and a flesh or material part. Demons have only the spirit part. When one comes to us are we go to them and speak we are interacting with more than the flesh and blood before us but their spirit withing and perhaps a demon, holy angel, or the Holy Spirit working through them. These people/spirits are among us and they are many. A false prophet is not only one who pretends to operate in the office of Prophet but those who profess to be speaking the Word of God but are not. Their speaking of lies may be intentional or the result of deep deception. Let’s look at verse one in the Message Bible.
1 John 4:1 (MSG)
1 My dear friends, don’t believe everything you hear. Carefully weigh and examine what people tell you. Not everyone who talks about God comes from God. There are a lot of lying preachers loose in the world.
Jesus spoke about this as well as the Apostle Luke in Acts.
Mark 4:24 (KJV)
24 And he said unto them, Take heed what ye hear: with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you: and unto you that hear shall more be given.
We must filter everything through the Word of God. This is why it is so important that we study to rightly divide the Truth.
Luke 8:18 (KJV)
18 Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have.
We are cautioned by the Master Himself to be careful how we hear. Are we just believing everything without proving it? Some just believe everything they hear in Church or brother so and so, or sister so and so. Be very careful, test all things. Let us be good Berean’s.
Acts 17:10-11 (KJV)
10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
