1 JOHN – 3:22
WE RECEIVE BECAUSE WE DO HIS COMMANDMENTS

Greetings precious saints of God and welcome back to this enlightening, empowering, and instructive study of 1st John. The Lord is so good to give us His thoughts, Words, and ways and the capacity to do as He does. Thanksgiving Day is behind us and hopefully the leftovers are gone. Christmas and the New Year will be upon us all too soon. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
1 John 3:22-24 (KJV)
22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
As we enter our primary Bible text for today, we are given a huge piece of information related to receiving or not receiving of Him. Him being the Lord. We receive because we keep His commandments doing those things that are pleasing in His sight. If we are not receiving, we are not doing something the Kingdom of God way, period. Prayer failures are never due to the Lord or His Word, it is always us. A real inconvenient truth. Keeping His commandments is love. Do you recall what is inexorably tied to love? Faith!
Galatians 5:6 (KJV)
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Our faith only works at the level of our love walk; one cannot exceed the other. So, you see why the Lord has had the Apostle John speak to us about love for so many verses. Let me now draw your attention back to the phrase “those things that are pleasing in his sight”.
Hebrews 11:6 (KJV)
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
It is impossible to please God without faith. Might we say then that it is impossible to please God without love? I don’t see how that would violate Scripture in the least. As we refocus on verses 23 and 24 the Apostle continues with the same theme. We must believe on Jesus and love one another. To believe on Jesus is to have faith in Jesus, faith in the redemption obtained for all who will receive it. Believing and acting on this knowledge is an acceptable expression of love for God. You see faith coupled with love. As we keep His commandments we know, have confidence, that we dwell in Him and that He is dwelling in us. We know this by the witness of the Holy Spirit within us.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
