1 JOHN – 3:19
LOVE – CONSCIENCE – CONVICTION
Video link: https://youtu.be/5jAx_tBBD7c
Greetings precious saints of God and welcome back to this enlightening, empowering, and instructive study of 1st John. The Lord is so good to give us His thoughts, Words, and ways and the capacity to do as He does. Thanksgiving Day is behind us and I suspect many are knee deep in leftovers. Christmas and the New Year will be upon us all too soon. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text continuing to read out loud.
1 John 3:17-21 (KJV)
17 But whoso hath this world’s good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
As we pick up with verse nineteen, we find great reassurance if we love our brother and are walking in expressed generosity. The “truth” is the Word of God. We are a product of the Word of God when we love in deed and in Truth. This is what the following Scripture is all about.
Romans 12:2 (KJV)
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
We are not to be conformed to the world, the ways of Satan, but we are to be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:29 (KJV)
29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
The word “hearts/heart” in verses 19, 20, 21 is a reference to our soul, the residence of our mind, will, and emotions. Our heart, our soul, is assured when we are doing the Word. Why? Through our knowledge of God and the Son, no condemnation of our soul, and no conviction of the Holy Spirit. Let’s take a look at this passage in the Passion Translation.
1 John 3:18-21 (PassionNTPsa)
18 Beloved children, our love can’t be an abstract theory we only talk about, but a way of life demonstrated through our loving deeds.
19 We know that the truth lives within us because we demonstrate love in action, which will reassure our hearts in his presence.
20 Whenever our hearts make us feel guilty and remind us of our failures, we know that God is much greater and more merciful than our conscience, and he knows everything there is to know about us.
21 My delightfully loved friends, when our hearts don’t condemn us, we have a bold freedom to speak face-to-face with God.
There is a great difference between us being condemned by our own hearts and the conviction of wrong by God (the Holy Spirit). We must discern between them. Our own heart may condemn us based on having an area still conformed to the world. We are to walk sensitive to the conviction of the Holy Spirit and our knowledge of Truth. In this way we have confidence toward God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
