Greetings dear ones and welcome back to this enlightening and empowering study of the Bible Book of 1st John. The Lord is really good. Of course, saying the Lord is good falls far short of His true character that we term as goodness. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text. Be sure that you are reading out loud, it is vital.
1 John 4:17-21 (KJV)
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
Today we are moving forward into verse eighteen. Isn’t this just the most wonderful Book? Here we see that spiritually fear and love are polar opposites. Many say that love and unbelieve are opposites and to a degree that is true but unbelief and faith are opposites. Our Scripture tells us that there is no fear in love and perfected or complete love casts out or does not allow fear. Fear is the belief that God will not come through. It is unbelief. Unbelief is sin. Fear is having more faith in the threat than in the promises of God. We have to know and practice who we are in Christ Jesus.
The origin of fear is the devil and the devil is torment personified. The more of the devil we allow the more torment we will have in our lives. This word is feminine in gender and has to do with punishment, fear of punishment. The feminine gender tells us that fear given words of unbelief will birth more fear and other ungodly ideas. We cleanse ourselves of fear by walking in love by our will and knowledge. This love, again, is doing the Scripture, having selfless motives, and abiding in Blood Covenant.
Next, we are told in verse nineteen that we love Him because He first loved us. We wouldn’t even know we needed Him if He did not reveal it to us. How did He first love us? He gave us His Word giving us a choice. He gave His Word to the folks in the Old Testament time and now we not only have the written Word but He sent His Son, the Word. Now, in verse twenty the Apostle John circles back to loving our brother. Do we think this is important? The Apostle John tells us point blank that it is not possible to love God and hate his brother. That is not to say the person is not saved but their love (agapē) is very immature. These are the Christians we observe around us that profess love of God, even loudly, but their speech is full of fear and a lack of love towards the brethren, their neighbors. For example, unforgiveness of any person is not only sin but is a lack of love.
As we finish this chapter we find, again, the commandment to not only love God but our brother. This is not a “give it a try” but an “do it”. True love of God is only complete or mature when we love, truly love, our brother. Remember we are commanded to love our brother, even our neighbor. In order to walk in love, we most obey, do, Scripture. Otherwise, we have violated love at step one, being in disobedience. We have violated the Blood Covenant by not honoring Gods’ love of the person, and are thinking only of our own interest and not that of the brother or God.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
