Greetings dear ones and welcome back to this enlightening and empowering study of the Bible Book of 1st John. The Lord is really good. Of course, saying the Lord is good falls far short of His true character that we term as goodness. Now, let’s turn our attention to our primary Bible text. Be sure that you are reading out loud, it is vital.
1 John 4:17-21 (KJV)
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
Does any of this sound familiar? It should, the Apostle of love is saying many of the same ideas over and over that we get it. The place of love in our walk with God is essential not just to be saved but for a victorious life, a life manifesting the promises of God. Remember love is the power, the fuel of faith and we cannot please God without faith. Nothing is obtained in the Kingdom of God without faith, thus without love. Could that be a key to unanswered prayer?
Let’s look closer at the word “perfect” in verse seventeen. This Greek word transliterated to English means to be complete, accomplish, consummate (in character), finish, and fulfill according to Strong’s Talking Greek & Hebrew Dictionary. In The Complete Word Study Dictionary – New Testament the meaning is to be complete, to be mature, to complete, or make perfect by reaching the intended goal. Does our love equal these definitions or do we still have some work to do? How important is this? Vitally important! It directly impacts our boldness. Boldness is a manifestation of faith, being fully persuaded, drives away all timidity or fear.
Let’s consider for a moment the term “day of judgment”. Perhaps some see this as referring to the Judgment Seat of Christ or even the White Throne Judgment (which is only for the wicked). It seems to me that this phrase is talking about the day-to-day judgments that are rendered in Heaven concerning the accusations of the Devil. Unrepented sin opens the door for an adverse judgment allowing the devils into our life. They come only to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10).
Ecclesiastes 10:8 (KJV)
8 He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
We ourselves break the hedge giving the serpent (devils) opportunity to bit. There are many examples of this in Scripture but the Book of Job is one that specifically mentions the hedge and how Job broke the hedge (fear and the words of his mouth). And finally, for today, one of the most astonishing statements in all of Scripture, “as he is, so are we in this world”. Wow! This is not automatic from the point of salvation but when we are mature, our hearts are completely His in love.
Lord willing, I will pick up right here next Friday. Remember, we love you, the Lord loves you, and there is nothing you can do about either one.
